“Oh, so you’re the househusband.”

You need to know that I’m not prone to machismo, and that I’m perfectly comfortable with the current role I have in our household. Nor am I overly concerned with political correctness, as my wife will occasionally note with a cringe. But I had no idea how to respond to this statement, delivered at a party by a man I’d never met, who turned out to be the brother of a friend of a friend.

“Yes, I suppose I am. And you must be the designated jackass of the party.” While the first sentence was spoken, the second stayed, thankfully, in my head. I’m not even sure he was aware that he was being both pathetically anachronistic and vaguely offensive, as though he had turned to the one black person at the party and said, “Ah, so you’re the Negro friend.”

GOD is a great and awesome GOD.

A blind man had supervised his one legged provisionally licensed son on the motorway, and the E.C. had issued guidelines to schoolchildren on how to eat a carrot safely. £10,000 had been awarded to a lady who had tripped over her own feet in a supermarket, because she was distracted by the bright lights and garish advertisements. Somebody had applied to university as ‘Mr. Michael Mouse’ and even though they had no formal qualifications, they had been provisionally accepted. A man had stopped collecting lawnmowers because his garden was so full of them that he couldn’t get to the grass to cut it. Another had just started to collect Concorde engines. Women were waiting until they were over thirty before having children, and men were waiting until they were over thirty before leaving home for the first time. Some youngsters had trashed a skateboard park, a playground and a sports…

It’s no wonder that Hollywood goes to Kauai  when it needs to evoke an exotic, otherwordly landscape. Raiders of the Lost Ark,  Jurassic Park, Avatar, King Kong, Pirates of the Caribbean, the list goes on and on. You want landscape that screams unearthly beauty – Kauai is where you go.

The island could be circumnavigated by car, except for the fact that the Nā Pali Coast stands in the way, making the Kuhio Highway a horseshoe that ends on the north coast in a muddy parking lot, blocked by the 3,000-foot knife-edge ridges of peaks sculpted into sluices and spires and tortuous valleys by almost 100 inches of rain a year.
